Landing A Live One With Link Bait

July 22nd, 2008 · No Comments ·

Link bait is essentially a way to attract attention by controversy of some kind. By posting something on a blog that’s outrageous or satirical or in some way that gets people talking, the word spreads in a flash.

Across blogs and every possible social networking site, it soon becomes known to more people in less time than some ordinary low-key post ever could given twice as much time.

Good or bad, it’s out there everywhere.

The best news is that others’ link bait can be used to your advantage.

Consider this: You read an obvious link bait article and it elicits a reaction from you.

You can then:

1. Decide to ignore it and not comment or respond in any way.

2. Respond and comment in a way that redirects some of that traffic to you in a positive light.

Not criticism, detraction or condemnation. Draw positive attention from the negative.

Your response might be to mention you liked something they didn’t or note something they omitted. The key is not to bad-mouth the writer, but rather draw the traffic they generated to you.
