It’s Day 8 of the I Am An Article series, and today let’s consider the written word in a different way: the spoken word. Your article marketing can be the basis for public speaking engagements and small group meetings.
I realize it’s the number one fear in the world, but being in the “real” world talking directly to a bunch of “real” people can do wonders for your online concerns.
One big reason people fear public speaking of any kind is not knowing what to say. Using your articles’ highlighted tips makes a perfect framework for a presentatation that’s well received. If your handwriting isn’t totally atrocious, you can list them for your audience in low-tech ways such as whiteboards or pre-written flip chartsĀ ( my fave from my stand-up trainer days). If you do Powerpoint, they make excellent bullet points for the slides.
And because each description of those tips is only a few sentences at most in your articles, you only need to touch on a few points during your talk and ask for questions later.
(A little “trainer” tip: Tell your audience upfront that questions will be taken AFTER your presentation and give reminders if anyone tries to ask during it anyway. That way, you maintain your flow and your overall train of thought doesn’t end up being a train wreck!)
Think this might be a good idea, but you’re still a little apprehensive? I suggest you find the nearest Toastmasters chapter and join it immediately. It’ll be more than worth it.
As for where and to whom to speak, check with clubs, organizations and adult/continuing education programs that you think may have an interest in your topic. You can even do what I once did – call your local adult/continuing education director and offer to teach a class!
Or if you prefer, you can just work up to that point after a while…

Thanks for this great suggestion. I’ve been article marketing for several months, but never thought about turning it into getting speaking engagements. Now that you mentioned it, it seems so obvious.
